Volcano Country – Volcano Hams
The more than three dozen volcanoes in the Steirisches Vulkanland (“Volcano Country”) have been extinct for millions of years, but to this day their weathered remains define this region. Everything that grows here is of value, the locals like to say. True to this principle, the local farmers produce a number of select volcano country specialities.
Berghofer Mill
“Where there is grain, there is flour – where there is flour, there is bread – where there is bread, there is life.”
The Berghofer mill produces the finest wheat, rye and spelt products. In the oil press, which has been in operation for nearly 100 years, visitors can see how the famous Styrian pumpkin seed oil is made. Of course, various products are available for sampling as well.
Schloß-Weingut Thaller – Thaller Castle & Winery
Despite its name, the Thaller Castle & Winery was built completely new and first opened to the public on 24 May 2006. The building is a wonderful copy of an old winery and castle that manages to avoid being kitschy. A place of production and aging, the Thaller Castle & Winery also provides a special setting in which to enjoy wine and a bit of culture.
Styrian Wine Routes
Styria’s wine country features eight specially laid-out wine routes along which most of the region’s vineyards can be found. The wine routes offer an inviting opportunity for a drive through the wine country and take you directly to the winegrower of your choice.
